Cephalexin for Dogs

While you may be more familiar with cephalexin as a drug developed for human usage, it also can be prescribed to dogs as well. How it works

The drug attacks the cell wall of the offending bacteria. While it doesn’t destroy it, it does halt its growth and weakens it, thus resulting in an immature cell wall. This renders it nearly defenseless against your dog’s antibodies, allowing the body to easily defeat it. Since only the invading cells are attacked, this is an efficient way to combat and remove infections and bacteria.

Dosage

You need to be very careful and precise about administering the correct amount of treatment to your pet. Cephalexin dosage for dogs will always vary based on the weight of the dog and the circumstances of what is beating treated. Usually the dosage is 10-15mg per pound every 8-12 hours, but you should always consult and listen to what your vet says regarding this.

Side effects

One of the cephalexin for dogs side effects is dehydration. After administering the medication, make sure that you keep an eye on your dog. You’ll probably notice that he is tending to drink a lot more water than normal, so just make sure that he always has a good amount available to him.

Likewise, another common side effect is hunger. Depending on the advice of your vet, you may need to feed your dog more food than normal during the duration that he is taking the drug.

A less pleasant side effect of this drug is vomiting. If you notice your dog is having trouble keeping his food down you should consult your vet as soon as you can. In the meantime, it’s best to stop administering the cephalexin because it’s possible your dog is allergic to it. If your dog has had reactions to previous antibiotics, then there is definitely a possibility he is also allergic to this. Likewise, if penicillin gave him trouble, there’s also a chance cephalexin will do the same.

When using it, make sure that you first consult with your vet and follow his advice.
